GTA VI JUST CAUSED A PS5 PRO SHORTAGE — BUT THERE'S A CATCH!
Grand Theft Auto VI is still months away from release, but it appears the hype surrounding Rockstar's next blockbuster may already be having an impact on PlayStation hardware.
And we're not talking about the standard PlayStation 5.
We're talking about the PS5 Pro.
Reports of limited availability and sold-out listings at major retailers have gamers asking one major question:
Did GTA VI just cause a PS5 Pro shortage?
Well... maybe. But there's a catch. Let's get into it.
🎮 GTA VI HYPE IS OFF THE CHARTS
Rockstar Games has continued to generate massive attention around Grand Theft Auto VI, with the game now scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026.
And with every new trailer, screenshot and gameplay reveal, anticipation continues to build.
But GTA VI isn't just another highly anticipated game.
For many gamers, this could be one of the biggest releases of the generation.
And that has some PlayStation owners looking at their current hardware and asking:
"Is my PS5 good enough?"
That's where the PS5 Pro enters the conversation.
The PS5 Pro is Sony's premium PlayStation 5 model, designed to deliver improved graphics, enhanced image quality and better performance in supported games.
And GTA VI is officially listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced.
That alone could be enough to convince some gamers to upgrade.
🔥 THEN SOMETHING INTERESTING HAPPENED
As anticipation for GTA VI continues to build, reports began appearing of PS5 Pro consoles becoming difficult to find at major retailers.
And when legitimate retail inventory disappears, something else tends to happen:
Scalpers show up.
Some PS5 Pro consoles have reportedly appeared on resale marketplaces at prices significantly higher than Sony's official retail price.
That's when the conversation went from:
"GTA VI is going to be huge."
to:
"Is GTA VI actually causing a PS5 Pro shortage?"
And honestly...It's not a crazy theory.
⚠️ BUT HERE'S THE CATCH
We need to pump the brakes before declaring:
"GTA VI SOLD OUT THE PS5 PRO!"
Because there isn't enough evidence to definitively prove that GTA VI is responsible for the entire shortage.
There could be several factors involved.
Sony may simply have limited PS5 Pro inventory available.
Production and component costs can affect supply.
Demand for the console may already have been increasing.
And, of course, the anticipation surrounding GTA VI could be one factor among several.
So rather than saying GTA VI definitely caused the shortage, it's more accurate to say:
GTA VI hype may be contributing to increased demand for the PS5 Pro.
And that's an important distinction.
🎯 AND THEN THERE'S THE 30 FPS QUESTION
Here's where things get REALLY interesting.
A lot of gamers considering a PS5 Pro upgrade may be doing it because they want the ultimate GTA VI experience.
Better visuals.
Better image quality.
Potentially improved graphical settings.
And hopefully...
60 frames per second.
But there's currently a major question surrounding that last one.
Reports indicate that GTA VI is targeting 30 FPS on consoles at launch, and Rockstar has not confirmed a 60-FPS mode specifically for the PS5 Pro.
So let's think about this.
You could potentially spend hundreds of dollars upgrading from a standard PS5 to a PS5 Pro...
...because you want the best possible GTA VI experience...
...and the game could still be running at 30 FPS.
Now, that doesn't mean the PS5 Pro would be pointless.
The Pro could still provide improvements to image quality, resolution, ray tracing and other graphical features depending on how Rockstar utilizes the hardware.
But if you're upgrading solely because you expect 60 FPS GTA VI...
you may want to wait for more information.
💰 AND THEN THERE'S THE PRICE
The PS5 Pro isn't an inexpensive upgrade.
Sony positioned the console as a premium piece of hardware.
So if demand continues increasing because of GTA VI, gamers could find themselves facing another problem:
Supply versus demand.
And whenever demand dramatically exceeds supply...
resellers and scalpers are usually waiting.
That's exactly why gamers should be cautious about paying hundreds of dollars above retail price just because a console is temporarily difficult to find.
🤔 SO, DID GTA VI CAUSE THE SHORTAGE?

Here's my take:
GTA VI could absolutely be contributing to PS5 Pro demand.
The timing makes the connection interesting.
The game is one of the most anticipated releases in gaming history.
It's PS5 Pro Enhanced.
And gamers who want the best possible console experience may be upgrading ahead of launch.
But we shouldn't confuse correlation with confirmation.
Until Sony or credible sales and inventory data confirms that GTA VI directly caused the shortage, calling it a GTA VI-created PS5 Pro shortage is premature.
🎮 BUT THE BIGGER STORY MAY BE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
We're still months away from GTA VI.
And if PS5 Pro demand is already increasing before launch...
what happens when November gets here?
Could PS5 Pro inventory become even harder to find?
Could prices increase?
Will Rockstar reveal exactly what the PS5 Pro enhancements will be?
And perhaps the biggest question:
Will GTA VI actually deliver a meaningful advantage on PS5 Pro over the standard PS5?
Because if Rockstar can demonstrate a substantial visual and performance advantage...
we could see even more gamers deciding that it's time to upgrade.
But if the differences are relatively minor and the game remains locked around 30 FPS...
some gamers may decide to save their money and stick with their standard PS5.
🗣️ WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Is GTA VI responsible for the PS5 Pro shortage?
Would GTA VI be enough to convince you to purchase a PS5 Pro?
And here's the big one:
Would you spend $899 or more on a PS5 Pro if GTA VI is still running at 30 FPS?
