GTA VI “Leaked” Gameplay Videos Are Taking Social Media by Storm
Is Rockstar Games dealing with another major GTA VI leak just days before its biggest official gameplay reveal?
It appears that way.
Grand Theft Auto VI is once again making waves on social media after a collection of alleged gameplay videos and images began circulating across the internet on August 18, just days before Rockstar Games is scheduled to provide fans with an official extended look at the highly anticipated title. on Netflix.
The latest footage reportedly shows protagonist Jason engaging in activities around Leonida, including playing basketball, driving through the city, and getting involved in an altercation with another character. An apparent image of the game's full map has also surfaced online.
While Rockstar has not publicly confirmed that the footage is legitimate, there is one major development that has caught the attention of the gaming community: copyright takedown requests are reportedly being issued against posts containing the footage.
And that has gamers asking one very important question:
Could this actually be real GTA VI gameplay?
Within hours, clips began appearing across social media platforms, with gamers attempting to analyze every frame.
Some of the alleged footage appears to reveal gameplay systems that have not previously been shown publicly, including possible stamina and progression mechanics, vehicle interaction, storage options, combat, and other details.
One clip reportedly shows Jason playing basketball, with the activity seemingly connected to a character attribute called “Focus.” Another reportedly shows Jason driving recklessly, crashing into another vehicle, fighting an NPC, and attracting police attention.
There are also reports of additional vehicle-related mechanics, including fuel, vehicle storage and more detailed vehicle damage.
However, none of these individual features should be considered officially confirmed yet.
The footage could potentially originate from an earlier development build, meaning mechanics seen in the videos could have changed or been removed before launch.
Is Rockstar Fighting Back?
If the footage is legitimate, Rockstar appears to be attempting to contain the situation.
Multiple reports indicate that social media posts containing the alleged gameplay have been hit with DMCA takedown requests. That has only fueled speculation among fans that the footage is authentic.
But there's an important distinction.
A copyright takedown doesn't automatically prove every image, video, or claim circulating online is genuine.
With GTA VI generating unprecedented levels of interest, fake footage, manipulated videos, AI-generated material and misleading screenshots are almost inevitable.
That means gamers should be extremely careful about believing everything they see.
The Timing Is Almost Unbelievable
Perhaps the most fascinating part of this entire situation is when the alleged leak happened.
Rockstar is preparing to give the world an official extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI on August 27, making this latest leak particularly awkward for the company.
Rockstar has spent years carefully controlling what fans see from the game.
Now, just days before its official presentation, gamers are potentially getting an early look at gameplay mechanics and the world of Leonida through unauthorized footage.
That creates an interesting situation for Rockstar.
Does the company continue with its original marketing strategy?
Or does Rockstar change the upcoming presentation to address some of the information that has already leaked?
Déjà Vu for Rockstar
This isn't the first time Rockstar has faced a major GTA VI leak.
Back in 2022, an enormous amount of unfinished GTA VI development footage was stolen and released online, giving the world an unprecedented look at the game years before its expected release.
Rockstar eventually acknowledged the intrusion and continued development.
This latest situation is obviously different in scale, but it raises familiar questions about security and the enormous pressure surrounding one of the most anticipated video games ever made.
Gamers Just Want to See GTA VI
Despite the controversy surrounding the alleged leaks, there's one thing that remains obvious:
Gamers are hungry for GTA VI.
The sheer speed at which the footage has spread demonstrates just how much interest surrounds Rockstar's next open-world blockbuster.
But personally, I think there's a good reason to avoid chasing every leaked video.
Rockstar's official GTA VI presentation is only days away.
Why potentially spoil the experience?
Seeing unfinished footage recorded from an unknown development build is one thing.
Seeing Rockstar officially introduce its vision for Grand Theft Auto VI is something entirely different.
What Happens Next?
The biggest question now is whether additional footage will continue appearing before August 27.
If the person or group responsible continues releasing material, Rockstar could find itself fighting a battle it simply cannot win: the internet moves faster than copyright takedowns.
For every video that disappears, another could appear minutes later.
And that's what makes this story so fascinating.
Rockstar may have spent years preparing the perfect GTA VI reveal, but social media may have already stolen some of the surprise.
For now, however, gamers should treat the circulating footage as alleged until Rockstar officially confirms what we're seeing.
One thing is certain:
The road to GTA VI just became a whole lot more interesting.
