Gamescom 2026: Should We Be Expecting Some Exciting Surprises?
With Gamescom 2026 just days away, the gaming industry is once again turning its attention toward Cologne, Germany. And with a packed lineup already confirmed, there is one question many gamers are asking:
Could Gamescom 2026 have a few surprises waiting for us?
Gamescom officially runs August 26–30, with Opening Night Live taking place August 25 and hosted by Geoff Keighley.
While several announcements and appearances are already known, Gamescom has a long history of saving a few surprises for the show. And this year, there are plenty of reasons to believe that what we know may only be part of the story.
Opening Night Live Could Set the Tone
Opening Night Live is arguably the biggest moment of Gamescom week.
The showcase is expected to feature new trailers, gameplay footage, updates and world premieres. Among the games already associated with the event are Final Fantasy VII Revelation, The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past and Metro 2039, while additional rumored appearances continue to fuel speculation.
And that's exactly where things get interesting.
Geoff Keighley's showcases have become known for keeping some announcements under wraps until the cameras are rolling.
So what could potentially surprise gamers?
Could Xbox Have Something Big Planned?
One of the biggest candidates for a surprise is Xbox.
Microsoft has already confirmed a substantial Gamescom presence as it celebrates 25 years of Xbox. The company says its booth will feature 25 upcoming games and 140 gaming stations, including Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Minecraft Dungeons II, Metro 2039, Stranger Than Heaven and Alien: Isolation 2.
But Xbox may not be finished.
Recent reporting has pointed toward the possibility of an unannounced first-party game reveal during Gamescom. The claim reportedly comes from insider NateTheHate and suggests the project could be developed externally.
f that turns out to be true, Xbox could have one of the biggest surprises of the entire show.
And considering the company's 25th anniversary celebrations, the timing would make perfect sense.
What About Resident Evil?
For horror fans, there's another interesting possibility.
A recent report claims that Resident Evil producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi could appear during Gamescom Opening Night Live, potentially connected to the rumored Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake.
At this point, however, this remains unconfirmed, and it should absolutely be treated as a rumor rather than fact.
Still, Capcom has plenty of reasons to make its presence felt.
With Resident Evil Requiem generating enormous interest and rumors surrounding the future of the franchise, a surprise announcement, trailer or additional information would undoubtedly get gamers talking.
And let's be honest...
Who wouldn't want another Resident Evil surprise?
Could We See Something Completely Unexpected?
That's the beauty of Gamescom.
Unlike events where virtually every announcement is revealed ahead of time, there is still room for publishers to walk onto the stage and catch everyone off guard.
Could we see a surprise remake?
A release-date announcement?
A previously unannounced sequel?
Perhaps even a completely new IP?
There are plenty of possibilities.
And with more than 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries expected at Gamescom 2026, the sheer size of the event leaves plenty of room for unexpected announcements and demonstrations.
The GTA VI Question
Then there's Grand Theft Auto VI.
With Rockstar's highly anticipated game dominating gaming discussions and alleged gameplay footage recently making the rounds online, some gamers are naturally wondering whether Rockstar could somehow become part of the Gamescom conversation.
However, there is currently no solid evidence that Rockstar plans to make a Gamescom announcement, so this is firmly in the speculation category.
Still, imagine Geoff Keighley saying:
“And one more thing…”
The internet would probably explode.
Gamescom Could Be Another Big Moment for Gaming
The gaming industry has changed dramatically over the past several years.
With E3 no longer serving as the industry's central showcase, events such as Summer Game Fest, The Game Awards and Gamescom have become increasingly important opportunities for publishers to reveal what's coming next.
Gamescom 2026 is particularly interesting because it sits at a fascinating point in the gaming calendar.
We're heading into the final months of the year with major releases approaching, while 2027 already has a growing list of highly anticipated titles.
That creates the perfect environment for publishers to start building anticipation for what's coming next.
So, Should We Expect Surprises?
Absolutely—but we should keep our expectations realistic.
Some of the biggest games expected at Gamescom are already known. Xbox has confirmed a major presence, numerous publishers will have playable games on the show floor, and Opening Night Live already has several confirmed appearances.
But Gamescom wouldn't be Gamescom without a few surprises.
The real question isn't whether there will be surprises.
It's how big those surprises will be.
Could Xbox steal the show with an unexpected announcement?
Could Capcom have another Resident Evil reveal waiting?
Could an unannounced game suddenly appear during Opening Night Live?
Or will one of the industry's biggest publishers completely catch everyone off guard?
We'll find out soon enough.
Gamescom 2026 officially begins August 26, with Opening Night Live kicking things off August 25.
And if the past has taught us anything, gamers should probably expect the unexpected.
