TAKE-TWO CEO STRAUSS ZELNICK REVEALS HIS UNUSUAL LEADERSHIP STYLE — AND GTA VI IS ABOUT TO PUT IT TO THE TEST!
NEXT GENERATION GAMING | INDUSTRY SPOTLIGHT
Running one of the biggest names in the video game industry is no small responsibility, especially when your company is preparing to release one of the most anticipated games in entertainment history.
In a recent interview with Business Insider, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick discussed his management philosophy, employee accountability, and why he believes traditional corporate leadership practices aren't always necessary.
His approach? Keep the mission clear, establish a strategy, build a collective culture, and hold everyone accountable for performance.
And with Grand Theft Auto VI approaching its November 19, 2026 release, Zelnick's leadership philosophy is about to face one of its biggest tests.
"THE BEST ENTERTAINMENT ON EARTH"
Zelnick says his mission is straightforward: make the best entertainment on earth.
Speaking at Business Insider's The Long Play event in New York, he said Take-Two's approximately 13,000 employees understand that mission.
His management philosophy centers on three principles:
Establish a mission.
Establish a strategy.
Build and communicate a collective culture.
For Zelnick, everyone within the company should understand what the organization is trying to accomplish and how their individual performance contributes to that objective.
NO CHIEF OF STAFF? ZELNICK PREFERS DIRECT ACCESS
One of the more surprising revelations was Zelnick's approach to accessibility.
The Take-Two CEO says he does not have a chief of staff, remains available on Slack around the clock, and shares his cellphone number with employees.
He believes employees should have the opportunity to communicate with him directly when they need assistance.
However, he also made clear that being accessible doesn't mean bypassing managers or interfering with every workplace decision. He describes himself as an empathetic listener who wants employees to feel heard and supported.
It's certainly a different approach from the traditional corporate leadership structure.
"DISCRETIONARY COMPENSATION PROGRAMS ARE TOXIC"
Zelnick also shared some strong opinions about employee compensation.
He believes discretionary compensation programs can create workplace politics and reward the wrong behavior over time. Instead, Take-Two uses a formula-based approach that connects compensation to individual performance and company performance. His philosophy is that employees should be rewarded when their performance and the company's results align with expectations. It's a straightforward approach, but one that places considerable emphasis on accountability.
Zelnick acknowledged that leadership styles differ and that his approach isn't necessarily right for every organization.
GTA VI: THE BIGGEST TEST YET?
The timing of these comments is particularly interesting. Take-Two is preparing for the November 19 launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, the first new mainline GTA installment since 2013.
The game is central to the company's financial outlook, with Take-Two forecasting at least $8 billion in net bookings for fiscal year 2027.
That puts enormous expectations on Rockstar Games and the broader Take-Two organization.
Zelnick's emphasis on performance, accountability, and delivering exceptional entertainment will be under intense scrutiny as GTA VI approaches release. Of course, his comments about corporate leadership don't tell us how Rockstar's development teams operate day to day. But they do offer a glimpse into the philosophy guiding the company behind some of gaming's biggest franchises.
NGG FINAL THOUGHTS
Strauss Zelnick clearly has his own ideas about what effective leadership should look like. No chief of staff, direct employee access, formula-based compensation, and a company-wide mission centered on delivering the best entertainment on earth.
Whether this approach is the right formula for every business is debatable. But there's no denying that Take-Two is approaching a defining moment.
With GTA VI on the horizon, the expectations are enormous. The world will soon find out whether the company can deliver another blockbuster capable of living up to the Grand Theft Auto legacy.
NOW WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!
What do you think of Strauss Zelnick's leadership style?
Would you prefer a CEO who makes themselves directly accessible to employees, or do you believe traditional management structures are necessary?
And most importantly, do you think GTA VI will live up to the enormous expectations surrounding its release?
