Every year, gamers around the world tune in for an evening celebrating the industry's biggest accomplishments, recognizing developers, honoring unforgettable gaming experiences, and, perhaps most importantly, getting a glimpse of what's coming next.
But let's be honest. While handing out awards is certainly important, there's another reason millions of gamers mark this event on their calendars.
THE WORLD PREMIERES!
The unexpected announcements. The mysterious trailers. The familiar franchises making a surprise return. And those moments when a trailer appears on screen and the entire gaming community collectively loses its mind.
With The Game Awards 2026 approaching, expectations are already building. And if previous shows are any indication, we could be in for another memorable evening.
So, what do we know? What games could make an appearance? And which franchises might finally have something to show us?
Let's get into it!

And considering the number of impressive releases we've seen throughout 2026, the competition could be fierce.
THE GAME AWARDS: MORE THAN JUST AN AWARDS SHOW!
Let's take a moment to appreciate how much this event has grown.
When The Game Awards first established itself as an annual gaming industry celebration, nobody could have predicted just how massive its worldwide audience would become.
According to the show's published viewership figures, the growth has been remarkable.

The 2025 broadcast delivered a record-breaking 171 million livestreams, surpassing the previous year's 154 million.
That's an extraordinary achievement and demonstrates just how much The Game Awards has become a major part of gaming culture.
But viewership isn't the only thing that makes this event special.
It's the announcements!
LOOKING BACK: SOME OF THE BIGGEST GAME AWARDS REVEALS!
One of the biggest reasons gamers get excited about this event is the possibility of seeing something completely unexpected.
And history has given us plenty of reasons to believe that.
THE GAME AWARDS 2024 – THE RETURN OF LEGENDARY FRANCHISES
Remember 2024?
The show delivered several announcements that immediately grabbed the gaming community's attention.
Among the biggest highlights:
THE WITCHER 4
CD Projekt Red opened the show with the announcement of the next chapter in The Witcher franchise. The cinematic presentation introduced Ciri as the central character, immediately generating discussion about the future of the series.
INTERGALACTIC: THE HERETIC PROPHET
Naughty Dog surprised audiences with the announcement of a brand-new science-fiction adventure. Coming from the studio behind The Last of Us and Uncharted, expectations immediately went through the roof.
OKAMI SEQUEL
Capcom delivered another major surprise with the announcement that the beloved Okami franchise would receive a new installment.
For fans who thought the series had been left behind, this was a moment worth celebrating.
And let's not forget Astro Bot taking home Game of the Year!
THE GAME AWARDS 2025 – THE SURPRISES KEPT COMING!
If 2024 was impressive, 2025 certainly didn't disappoint.
The show delivered more than 50 game reveals, trailers, and announcements.
Some of the biggest highlights included:
DIVINITY: Larian Studios revealed a brand-new entry in its Divinity franchise, creating immediate excitement following the success of Baldur's Gate 3.
STAR WARS: FATE OF THE OLD REPUBLIC: A new Star Wars role-playing adventure directed by Casey Hudson, director of the original Knights of the Old Republic.
CONTROL RESONANT: Remedy Entertainment revealed the next chapter in its Control universe.
TOMB RAIDER: LEGACY OF ATLANTIS: A new reimagining of Lara Croft's original adventure.
TOMB RAIDER: CATALYST: Another major Tomb Raider announcement, introducing a new adventure scheduled for 2027.
RESIDENT EVIL REQUIEM: Capcom generated excitement with the confirmation of Leon Kennedy's involvement.
And who could forget Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 taking home Game of the Year and making history with nine awards?
These announcements demonstrate something important: The Game Awards has become a major promotional stage for developers and publishers looking to generate excitement around their upcoming projects.
And that's precisely why expectations for 2026 are so high.
WHAT COULD WE SEE AT THE GAME AWARDS 2026?
Now we're getting to the fun part!
Let's be clear: The following are NGG's potential reveal predictions and wishlist items. None of these announcements have been confirmed for the December show.
But if we're talking about games and franchises that could generate enormous excitement, there are several possibilities worth discussing.
1. GRAND THEFT AUTO VI – WILL ROCKSTAR STEAL THE SHOW?
Let's start with the elephant in the room.
GRAND THEFT AUTO VI.
Is there any other game that could generate this level of excitement with a single trailer?
Rockstar Games has managed to keep the gaming community talking about GTA VI for years. Every screenshot, trailer, and development update generates enormous attention.
With the game scheduled for November 19, 2026, its release will be just weeks before The Game Awards.
Could Rockstar make a surprise appearance with a new trailer, an announcement about future content, or perhaps something related to GTA Online?
We wouldn't rule it out.
However, Rockstar has historically operated on its own promotional schedule, so an appearance should not be taken for granted.
NGG PREDICTION: A GTA VI appearance would be one of the biggest moments of the entire broadcast.
2. THE NEXT MORTAL KOMBAT – IS NETHERREALM READY TO REVEAL SOMETHING?
We've already discussed the future of Mortal Kombat here at NEXT GENERATION GAMING.
NetherRealm Studios has confirmed that another Mortal Kombat project is in development, but fans are still waiting for meaningful details.
Could The Game Awards provide the perfect stage for an official reveal?
A cinematic announcement, a title reveal, or even a brief gameplay demonstration would be enough to get the fighting-game community talking.
NGG PREDICTION: Mortal Kombat deserves a place on the potential reveal list. We would love to see NetherRealm finally pull back the curtain.
3. RESIDENT EVIL – CAPCOM HAS MORE NIGHTMARES TO DELIVER!
Capcom has continued to demonstrate its ability to keep the Resident Evil franchise relevant.
With Resident Evil Requiem among the major releases of 2026, could Capcom have another surprise waiting?
A new remake announcement? A look at another upcoming project? Perhaps a teaser suggesting where the franchise is heading next?
Capcom has a history of delivering exciting announcements, and The Game Awards would provide an enormous audience.
NGG PREDICTION: Don't be surprised if Capcom has something interesting to show.
4. PLAYSTATION – WHAT IS SONY KEEPING UNDER WRAPS?
Sony has several major franchises that could generate enormous excitement with a new announcement.
Could we finally see more of Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet?
Could Insomniac Games provide another look at its upcoming projects?
And what about the next God of War?
Sony doesn't necessarily need to reveal an entirely new franchise. A substantial gameplay presentation for an already-announced PlayStation project could be enough to steal the spotlight.
NGG PREDICTION: We expect PlayStation to have a strong presence, although a major first-party world premiere remains purely speculative.
5. XBOX – MICROSOFT NEEDS TO BRING THE HEAT!
Microsoft has an enormous collection of gaming franchises.
Halo. Gears of War. Fable. Forza. The Elder Scrolls.
The possibilities are extensive.
Could we see another look at Fable? Perhaps an update on Gears of War: E-Day? Could Bethesda finally provide something substantial about its next major project?
And let's not forget the possibility of an entirely new Xbox franchise.
NGG PREDICTION: Xbox has plenty of opportunities to deliver a memorable announcement. A major first-party reveal would certainly get our attention.
6. THE UNEXPECTED – THE ANNOUNCEMENT NOBODY SAW COMING!
Here's where things get really interesting.
Some of the most memorable moments in The Game Awards history have come from announcements nobody expected.
Could Konami surprise us with another Silent Hill project?
Could Capcom announce another Onimusha adventure?
Could Hideo Kojima reveal something new?
Could a forgotten franchise finally receive the comeback fans have been requesting?
These are the announcements that make watching The Game Awards worthwhile.
Sometimes the biggest surprise isn't the game everyone expects. It's the game nobody knew was coming.
THE GAME OF THE YEAR RACE – WHO DESERVES THE TROPHY?
Of course, we cannot discuss The Game Awards without discussing the biggest prize of the evening.
GAME OF THE YEAR!
The 2026 gaming calendar has delivered several major contenders, including:
Resident Evil Requiem
Saros
007 First Light
Pragmata
Pokémon Pokopia
Other major releases that could enter the conversation
The final nominees are expected in mid-November.
And there's another interesting question: Could Grand Theft Auto VI enter the competition?
With its scheduled November 19 release, its eligibility will depend on the official submission and cutoff rules. We will have to wait for clarification rather than assume it qualifies for the 2026 awards.
One thing is certain: The competition deserves attention.
WHAT WE WANT FROM THE GAME AWARDS 2026
Here's our wish list at NEXT GENERATION GAMING.
We want fewer announcements that amount to nothing more than cinematic teasers with no meaningful information.
We want gameplay!
Show us what these developers have been working on. Give us release windows, meaningful updates, new franchise announcements, and demonstrations that actually tell gamers something about the experiences coming our way.
We also want the smaller studios to receive their moment in the spotlight. The gaming industry isn't built exclusively around the biggest publishers and recognizable franchises.
Independent developers deserve the opportunity to reach millions of potential players.
And finally, let's have some surprises!
Don't reveal everything ahead of time. Give the gaming community something to talk about the following morning.
FINAL THOUGHTS – DECEMBER 10 CAN'T GET HERE FAST ENOUGH!
The Game Awards has evolved into something much bigger than an annual ceremony.
It's a celebration of the gaming industry, an opportunity to recognize the developers behind our favorite experiences, and a worldwide stage for announcing what could define the next generation of gaming.
Looking back at previous shows, we've seen legendary franchises return, unexpected sequels announced, new intellectual properties introduced, and games that eventually became some of the industry's biggest releases.
With 2026 approaching its final stretch, we're ready to see what comes next.
Will Rockstar make an appearance?
Will NetherRealm finally reveal more about Mortal Kombat?
Will Sony or Microsoft surprise us?
Will Capcom deliver another unexpected announcement?
Or will Geoff Keighley close the show with something absolutely nobody saw coming?
We don't have those answers yet.
But that's part of the excitement!
OUR MESSAGE TO THE GAMING INDUSTRY: BRING ON THE WORLD PREMIERES, BRING ON THE SURPRISES, AND GIVE US SOMETHING WORTH TALKING ABOUT!
